Airbnb’s billionaire CEO has named a spectacular ‘floating’ house hovering about the sea his favourite place to spend a night in Australia.
The ‘Pole House’ perched above Fairhaven Beach on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road is one of Australia’s most photographed buildings as well as being top of Brian Chesky’s ‘must stay’ travel list.
Suspended on a single cement block 40 metres above six kilometres of rolling waves and ivory sand, the 64sqm villa creates the illusion of floating amongst the clouds as visitors walk the path towards its front door.
The 39-year-old American businessman, who is the co-founder of the world’s leading holiday rental platform, is one of countless guests and passersby inspired by its breathtaking views and unusual architecture.

But the romantic getaway, which features a suspended fireplace and a queen-size bedroom that captures sweeping sea views, comes at a cost, with a weekly rate of more than $5,000 during off-peak season and almost $6,000 a week in January.
Mr Chesky, who was named one of Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People’ in 2015, said the villa’s location and the fact it felt like a modern treehouse made it one of his favourite Airbnb experiences not only in Australia, but around the world.
After staying there in 2015, he told news.com.au it was ‘one of the most extraordinary and the most unique places’.
