The Masked Singer choreographers on teaching celebs in big costumes to dance

Choreographer duo Antony Ginandjar and Ashley Evans reveal how they go about the “absolutely bonkers” task of teaching celebs in big costumes how to dance on The Masked Singer.

Singing and dancing on stage is one thing… singing and dancing on stage while being filmed for a top-rating TV show is another thing… and singing and dancing on stage for a wildly successful TV show while in an absurd masked costume, is just a whole other can of jazz hands. But hey, that’s showbiz baby.

We’ve seen some pretty energetic performances in the current third season of The Masked Singer– from Ella Hooper as Baby to Lote Tuqiri as Piñata. Yet, as ~polished~ as some of these performances may appear, it would take a whole lot of time and training for the celebrity contestants to wrap their heads around the challenge of balancing singing with choreography while also masked.

Cue: choreographer powerhouse couple Antony Ginandjar and Ashley Evans.

‘The biggest and most fabulous form of PPE around’

The LA-based duo has worked with the likes of Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Kesha (to just name a few) and has returned to their home country to worked on The Masked Singer Australia – a show which Evans describes as “absolutely bonkers”, Herald Sun reports.

“It’s the biggest and most fabulous form of PPE around,” Ginandjar jokes of the arduous task it must be to perform on stage in elaborate costume.

“Working on Katy Perry’s last tour we had dancing lips and TVs,” he says, “in The Masked Singer it’s a kebab and pavlova”.

While the celebrity under the kebab costume is yet to be revealed (we’re betting it’s Jack Vidgen), Pavlova was recently revealed to be singer-songwriter Mahalia Barnes.

‘Puts everyone on the same playing field’

As wearing an elaborate costume during a stage performance limits vision and mobility, Evans believes the wacky wardrobe choices, “puts everyone on the same playing field”.

“There’s a carefree energy about it,” says Melbourne-raised Evans of the Network 10 show, “and with all the madness going on, it’s so good to watch some lighthearted entertainment.”
